National Situation Update: Thursday, March 10, 2011

Significant National Weather

Midwest:
Rain will develop over parts of the Northern Plains on Friday morning changing over to snow by Friday evening except for a small region over the Upper Mississippi Valley. Freezing rain will also develop on Friday morning. A strong storm over the Ohio Valley/Great Lakes region will move slowly to eastern Ontario by Friday evening.

Northeast:
Patches of freezing rain may develop over parts of northern New England today and Friday morning. Rain is expected overnight into Friday, which will begin a brief period of a wintry mix across the interior portion of the region. While the heaviest rain will fall across New York State, some renewed river flooding is possible across southern New England. Flood and Flash Flood Watches, Warnings, and Advisories have been issued for New England.

South:
Thunderstorms from the southeast to the Mid-Atlantic are expected on Friday, some of these storms may become severe. Heavy rainfall with possible flooding is likely up the Mid-Atlantic into the Appalachians and Lower Great Lakes/New England. Hail, heavy wind gusts and isolated tornados are possible into Thursday morning.

West:
A storm front moving onshore over the Pacific Northwest will move inland to the Upper Midwest by Friday night. The storm will produce rain along the coast and lower elevations with snow at higher elevations as far east as the Northern Rockies. On Friday as the system moves onto the Northern Plains snow will wind down over the Northern/Central Rockies. Severe Weather and Heavy Rain across the Southern and Eastern U.S.

Widespread heavy precipitation has occurred and is forecast to occur across much of the eastern United States, with severe weather having been reported across the southern and eastern United States. Flood watches and warnings are in effect due to the heavy precipitation and saturated soils. Near record flooding is possible today in some areas in the Northeast.

Fire Activity

New Mexico
Quail Ridge Fire (Grant County) FEMA 2866–FM-NM approved March 8, 2011. Over 1,776 acres have burned and the fire is 80% contained. All evacuations orders have been lifted. Fire activity was minimal, which allowed crews to continue mopping up. 200 structures were threatened; 13 homes, (60 total structures) destroyed. Full containment is expected Friday. The New Mexico Governor toured the burn area and met with firefighters on March 9. (FEMA Region VI)
