National Situation Update: Sunday, July 5, 2009

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

Significant Weather

West:
Showers and thunderstorms continue to develop across the Rockies and High Plains, but are forecast to diminish by Monday.  Red Flag Warnings remain in effect for most of western Washington until midnight PDT tonight.  Flood Warnings continue for locations along the Wind River in Wyoming.  Highs will range from the 80s and 90s in Washington, Oregon and Idaho to between 100 and 118 in the Southwest.
South:
A cold front moving into the region will produce thunderstorms (some severe) from west Texas to the Carolinas.  Flood Warnings continue for rivers in southern Louisiana and west-central and southern Florida.  Temperatures will range from the 70s in portions of Tennessee and North Carolina to the low 100s across south Texas.
Midwest:
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the upper Ohio Valley while isolated thunderstorms are possible in the High Plains.  Flood Warnings remain in effect along the Red River in northern North Dakota, the James River in northern South Dakota and the Illinois River in central Illinois.
Temperature highs will range from the 70s to 80s along the Canadian border and in the Ohio Valley.
Northeast:
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue for northern New York and portions of the Mid-Atlantic.  High temperatures today will be in the 70s, with a few 80s across portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New England.(NOAA, National Weather Service, Various Media Sources)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.
Eastern Pacific
Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with an area of low pressure located about 250 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico has diminished somewhat this evening.  However, upper-level winds are favorable for additional development of this system over the next couple of days as it moves west-northwestward around 10 mph.  There is a 30 to 50 percent chance of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
Central Pacific:
No tropical cyclones are expected through Sunday morning.
Western Pacific 
No activity.  (NOAA, HPC, National Hurricane Center, Central Pacific Hurricane Center and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

Earthquake Activity

No significant earthquake activity in the United States or its territories. (USGS, Earthquake Hazards Program)
