National Weather Forecast

Midwest  
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast from eastern Kansas and Oklahoma northeastward to Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Some storms may become severe with large hail and damaging winds.
Northeast 
Showers and thunderstorms are predicted for southern New York and Southern New England, with the threat of severe storms producing strong winds and hail in the Mid-Atlantic region throughout the day.
South  
Early morning thunderstorms are forecast over portions of Oklahoma and northern Texas.
West 
Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and some hail are possible from central California up to Oregon. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will also extend eastward into the Rockies. (National Weather Service, various media sources)

Wildfire Update

National Fire Activity as of Tuesday, June 2, 2009:

Initial attack activity:  Light (123 new fires)
New large fires: 3
Large fires contained: 3
Uncontained large fires: 4
States affected: Alaska, Arizona and Oregon

Broken Snowshoe Fire near McGrath, AK:
There are 25,445 acres involved with 36% containment.  Transfer to a Type 3 command structure is planned for the end of the operational period on June 4. The decrease in acreage (-312 acres) is due to better mapping information. No requests for FEMA Region X assets.(National Interagency Fire Center, National Incident Information Center, NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center, NGB)

Disaster Declaration Activity

The Governor of Arkansas is requesting a Major Disaster Declaration as a result of severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding beginning on April 27, 2009, and continuing. The Governor is specifically requesting Public Assistance, including direct Federal assistance, for 37 counties and Hazard Mitigation statewide.

FEMA-1838-DR-West Virginia, Amendment # 2. Effective June 2, 2009, this declaration is amended to include Calhoun, Gilmer, Lewis, Roane, Upshur, and Wirt counties for Public Assistance.  (FEMA HQ)
