National Situation Update: Sunday, February 22, 2009

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

Significant National Weather

Midwest:  Parts of northern Wisconsin, Michigan, northern Indiana, Ohio and eastern Kentucky will see scattered snow showers today with the rest of the Midwest remaining dry.

Northeast:  A new storm system will develop around the mid-Atlantic coast today bringing an increase in precipitation across New England. Coastal areas, including Boston, will see a mix of rain and snow but interior areas will see mainly snow. Snow will develop across eastern New York and stretch across northern New England. Snowfall totals in New Hampshire and Maine will be more than a foot. The mid-Atlantic up through Connecticut will see rain and possibly some light snow.

South:  A cold front moving through the southeast will bring lower temperatures throughout most of the south today. Any light showers over the Carolinas and snow showers in the southern Appalachians will end this morning.

West:  Rain and higher mountain snow today in northern California, Oregon and western Washington. Most of the interior west will remain dry although showers are possible as far as Utah as the storm moves east.

Volcanic Activity – Redoubt Volcano, Alaska

Although no eruption has occurred, unrest at Redoubt Volcano continues with variable amplitudes of volcanic tremors.  The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is staffed 24 hours a day and continues to closely monitor Redoubt.  The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE (second highest level) and the Volcano Alert Level remains at WATCH (second highest level). A gas measurement flight took place February 21 but the results have not yet been posted.  (USGS, Alaska Volcano Observatory, R-X)
