National Weather Summary

Midwest
Thunderstorms with heavy rain will persist across the northern Plains. Some storms across the Dakotas may become severe with heavy rain and large hail.  Expect anywhere from two to four inches of rain across parts of the Dakotas by Wednesday and flood watches are in effect for parts of the region.

Much of Kansas, Oklahoma and western Missouri will see mainly scattered thunderstorms during the afternoon hours.

South
Scattered thunderstorms are forecast for parts of the South from Virginia down to northern Florida especially in the afternoon. An area of severe weather, with locally heavy rain, is forecast from coastal South Carolina to northern Florida.

Northeast
Scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially near the coast from New England down to Virginia, are possible. Showers and thunderstorms will be variable down the spine of the Appalachians.

West
Most of the West, from the Great Basin westward will experience a dry Tuesday. Look for a few scattered afternoon thunderstorms from eastern Montana down to New Mexico. (NWS, Media Sources)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic/Caribbean:
Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Eastern Pacific:
As of 5:00 a.m. the National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Three-E, located about 505 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo Mexico. Max sustained winds 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph. The chance for it to intensify to a storm has essentially diminished.

Western Pacific:
No tropical cyclone formation is expected during the next 48 hours. (NOAA, National Hurricane Center, Central Pacific Hurricane Center and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

Earthquake Activity

A series of earthquakes with stronger magnitudes registered between 2.6 and 4.6, were detected in the Central California region on Tuesday, June 12, between 3:23 and 4:19 a.m. ET; 9 miles SE of Mammouth Lakes. Depths of 5 to 8 miles were registered.  No reports of damage.(NOAA, USGS, Earthquake Hazards Program, Alaska Earthquake Information Center, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center)

Preliminary Damage Assessments

Nebraska - Individual Assistance PDAs for two counties and Public Assistance for 19 counties are scheduled to begin the week of June 18, 2007.

Kansas - Individual Assistance and Public Assistance PDAs have been requested for 3 counties. (FEMA HQ)

Wildfire Update

National Preparedness Level:   2
States Most Affected: Georgia and Florida
National Fire Activity as of Sunday, June 11, 2007 at 7:30 a.m. EDT:

  • Initial attack activity: Light (105 new fires burning 1,258 acres).
  • New large fires:        2
  • Large fires contained:                3
  • Uncontained large fires:                7
  • Year to date fires:      41,674
  • Year to date acres burned 1,456,362

Current Situation:
The rainfall and cooler temperatures have helped the firefighters with the containment of the large fires. Several historical sites, however, remain threatened. The cooler temperatures in the West and Alaska kept fire activity to a minimum.

The Incident Management Team (IMT) assigned to FEMA for tornado disaster support in Greensburg, KS will be released June 12, 2007. Demobilization of base camp occurred Monday.

Mooseheart Fire - 26,693-acre fire located twenty-four miles southwest of Manley Hot Springs, AK, continues to burn southwest of the Tanana and Cosna River confluence. Disaster Declaration Activity

The President has signed FEMA-1708-DR for Missouri.  17 counties designated for Individual Assistance and 19 counties designated for Public Assistance.  Lee Rosenberg is the FCO.  All Missouri counties are eligible for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

FEMA-1699-DR-Kansas.  Amendment #7.  Amended to include Dickinson and Ellsworth counties for Individual Assistance (already designated for Public Assistance). (FEMA HQ)
