National Situation Update: Friday, June 8, 2007

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

National Weather Summary

West:  High pressure centered over Colorado dominates weather over the region with only isolated precipitation forecast for the Northern Rockies.  High temperatures will range from the 50s in the Rockies to 100s in the Desert Southwest.

Midwest:  A frontal system extending from a low in Canada will produce a significant severe weather outbreak for much of the Midwest and southern Plains. Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast from The Great lakes across parts of Ohio, eastern Indiana and Kentucky and as far south as Central Texas. These thunderstorms may produce large hail, damaging winds and even a few tornadoes. High temperatures will range from the 60s in the northern Great Lakes, 70s in the Plains and northern half of the Mississippi Valley behind the front and 90s across much of the Ohio Valley ahead of a cold front.

South:  The most significant weather in the region will be along the tail end of the cold front dropping in out of the Midwest. Thunderstorm activity will extend from Tennessee to central Texas. A few thunderstorms may turn severe with hail and damaging winds.  High temperatures will be in the 70s behind the cold front in Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle to the upper 90s ahead of the front

Northeast:  The cold front moving in from the Midwest will produce severe thunderstorms over western New York, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia tonight with gusty winds, hail and even isolated tornados. Ahead of the cold front high temperatures will range from 80s in New York and western New England. The warmest day of the year is forecast for the Mid- Atlantic with highs well into the 90s. Wisconsin Severe Storms

Severe storms moved across Wisconsin Thursday, producing strong winds and tornadoes.  Most of the state was under a tornado watch and many counties were under tornado warnings. 

Marathon County officials have reported a mobile home and other buildings destroyed near Mosinee.

There were reports of injuries as a result of the baseball size hail in Wisconsin Rapids (Wood County).  

The Marinette County Emergency Management reports a tornado in Stevenson, with trees and power lines downed. The County Mobile Command vehicle had been dispatched to that area. 

The Langlade County Sheriff reports that the Bear Paw Resort is destroyed to include the Inn and area cabins. Approximately 13 commercial buildings were affected.  The Red Cross responded to the scene.

Oconto County reports damages near Shadow Lake, with many trees down and initial report of homes damaged (quantity unknown, area search is being conducted). Local fire services are conducting search and rescue operations. 

The State EOC was partially activated.   The State reports no Local or State Declarations of Emergency at this time.(FEMA RegionV)

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic/Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico:
No significant tropical activity - Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next 48 hours.

Eastern Pacific:
An area of disturbed weather is located about 400 miles south of Acapulco Mexico.  Some slow development of this system is possible over the next day or so as it moves slowly westward.

Western Pacific:

Preliminary Damage Assessments

Public assistance PDAs for five counties in Oklahoma are scheduled to begin June 11, 2007.

Individual Assistance PDAs for two counties and Public Assistance for 19 counties in Nebraska are scheduled to begin June 18, 2007(FEMA HQ)

Fire Weather Discussion:

Dry and windy conditions will continue for eastern Arizona and New Mexico today. Cooler conditions with higher relative humidity will continue to filter into the West behind yesterday’s cold

Disaster Declaration Activity

FEMA-1707-DR was declared Thursday, June 7, 2007 for the state of Oklahoma, for Severe Storms, Tornadoes and Flooding. The declaration includes Public Assistance for 18 counties and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program statewide. The FCO is Philip E. Parr.  (FEMA HQ)
