National Situation Update: Tuesday, March 20, 2007

Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED).

Cold in the Northeast, Rain in the Midwest, Rain and Snow in the West

Northeast:
High temperatures are forecast to range from the wind-chilled 20s in much of northern New England and New York State to the low 70s in extreme southern Virginia.

Southern New England and Pennsylvania will see highs in the 30s and 40s.
 
Midwest:
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will extend from southern Kentucky through Missouri into the southern Plains Tuesday.

Some storms could produce locally heavy rain. A flood watch has been issued for parts of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, where up to 3 inches of rainfall is expected.

The Plains and Upper Midwest will see gusty southerly winds, with temperatures in the 70s across the western high plains of South Dakota and Nebraska.

High temperatures will be in the 30s in northern Minnesota and much of Michigan.
 
South:
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in central Texas and Oklahoma, and extend eastward across northern Arkansas and Tennessee into the southern Appalachians.

Scattered rain showers are forecast for southern Florida.

West:
Scattered rain and mountain snow showers will extend from the Pacific Northwest and western Montana southwestward across northern and western Nevada into northern and central California today.

Snow is expected in the Cascades, Olympics, High Sierras, Bitterroots and peaks of central Idaho.

In western Washington and northwest Oregon, snow levels will be around 500 feet by Tuesday afternoon.

Gusty winds are expected over the Great Basin, and higher elevations of Southern California and the Southwest.

High temperatures are expected to range from the 30s in the Cascades and higher Sierras to the 80s in the desert Southwest. Parts of the eastern Montana and eastern Wyoming will be in the 70s.  (NWS, media sources)
