MERS Support Considerations
Following are some support considerations:
- The MERS and MATTS have both highly specialized equipment and highly trained people. MERS and MATTS assets are self-sustaining and fully operational in austere conditions.
- Each MERS or MATTS deployment is tailored to meet specific emergency or special event response requirements.
- Response time (hours to arrive on site) depends on the distance of the MERS or MATTS to the disaster location and/or the availability of airlift. The estimated rate of travel is 50 miles per hour. Non-emergency travel is restricted to 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday.
- MERS and MATTS equipment and personnel can be pre-positioned to support forecasted emergencies or scheduled events.
- The equipment may be driven or airlifted by C-130, C-141, C-17, or C-5 military cargo aircraft to event locations. If airlift is required, FEMA will make the necessary arrangements.
- Although emergency services are normally provided from a building selected as a Disaster Field Facility, initial services can be provided directly from the mobile equipment.
- Deployments must consider the space requirements of the supporting vehicles. Normally, a parking lot adjacent to the Disaster Field Facility will provide adequate space for the deployment vehicles. The Mobile Operations Division can provide additional information relating to the space and siting requirements of specific equipment.
