Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS)
Success Stories
FEMA in partnership with the U.S. Army, the chemical industry and other stakeholders incorporated lessons learned and upgraded systems to improve reliability, efficiency and distribution of emergency alerts and warnings. From these lessons, new processes and improvements were developed and success stories emerged that were incorporated into the IPAWS program.
- Emergency Alert System (EAS)
- Upgraded the reliability and effectiveness of a satellite broadcast
- Increased the number of direct receipt radio stations from 34 to over 800
- Used by emergency managers on a State and/or local level to notify residents of emergency events and AMBER alerts
- National Warning System (NAWAS)
- Upgraded the current analog telephone system
- Developed a collaboration tool used by emergency managers during events
- Upgraded system to add survivable voice, video, and data capabilities
- Provided communities with NOAA all hazards weather radio
- Provided NOAA radios to K-12 public schools
