Q: Who is eligible to register for state and federal disaster assistance? A: You may be eligible if you live in a federally designated county and incurred damage from severe storms, flooding and tornadoes May 18 through June 2. The six counties now designated for Individual Assistance are Canadian, Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie.  Q: If I had damage from the severe storms, flooding and tornadoes May 18 through June 2 but live in a county that has not been designated for Individual Assistance, should I register anyway?

OKLAHOMA CITY – State and federal disaster assistance now tops $7.6 million for Oklahoma homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the May 18-June 2 severe storms, flooding and tornadoes.  More than 10,000 households in six designated counties have applied for assistance from the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following the storms. The designated counties are Canadian, Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie.

Joy radiates from Bob McKee’s face as he reclaims his cat, “Mr. Social” from the shelter where the pet has been kept safe since severe storms, flooding and tornadoes hit Oklahoma May 18 – June 2. McKee said he was thrilled to find his yellow cat. “He is my wife’s favorite,” he says.After the McKee home was damaged, there was debris piled high in front of the house. Mr. Social used to go in and out of the house prowling through the piles. One night he didn’t come home. Luckily, he was found and taken to a shelter, where McKee reclaimed him 48 hours later.

Updates
People often find that a major disaster can inflict damage long after the storms have passed. Jobs are lost. Day-to-day life is disrupted. Communities struggle to rebuild. And frequently, survivors sink into depression or emotional turmoil. The fact that all of these are common post-disaster experiences doesn’t make it any easier for people to cope with them. However, a presidential disaster declaration unlocks specialized programs aimed at helping survivors get back on their feet.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Homeowners, renters and business owners in Canadian County who sustained damage as a result of recent back-to-back storms may now apply for state and federal disaster assistance. The federal disaster declaration now covers damage incurred by severe storms, flooding and tornadoes May 18 through June 2. Individual Assistance was extended to Canadian County after a review of ongoing damage assessments by officials from the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
