After you register for disaster assistance with FEMA, you may receive a letter in the mail with a Small Business Administration (SBA) return address. You need to open it and complete the forms inside even if you are not a business. It's a critical step in the recovery process; whether or not you want a low-interest loan, if you do not return your SBA application, you may miss out on other assistance from FEMA.Applicants may also apply online:

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors who have already registered with FEMA are urged to keep in touch and keep their contact information current, especially if they have been displaced by the disaster. After survivors register for assistance, FEMA will reach out to them to set up housing inspections and mail determination letters, so updating your phone number and mailing address as needed is key to ensure that your recovery is not delayed.

NEW YORK — Don't let the word "business" in the name U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) fool you. If you are a homeowner or renter, the SBA is a primary source of federal funds for long-term recovery. The SBA's low-interest disaster loans of up to $200,000 can help qualified homeowners repair or replace damaged real estate. In addition, renters and homeowners may get up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged personal property. In both cases, these SBA loans are only for damages not covered by your insurance.

In the one month since President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in New York for Hurricane Sandy, the federal government has contributed more than $1 billion to help New Yorkers, their communities and the state with disaster-related needs, as well as assigning equipment and supplies, and deploying thousands of people to assist in the response and recovery from the storm.

I am a native New Yorker. I was born in New York City.  I grew up in the city’s Public Housing developments in East Harlem and my Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters still live here.  I worked for the New York Fire Department for 20 years, eventually serving as a Captain.  I worked at the New York Office of Emergency Management and then I joined FEMA. I’m a proud New Yorker and today, I’m honored to be part of the federal team that is working hard to assist my home city and state.

NEW YORK – Hurricane Sandy survivors in Rockland County have until 6 p.m. Saturday,  Dec. 1, to visit a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at Village Hall. The center is at 478 Piermont Ave., Piermont, NY 10968, and has been helping storm survivors since Nov. 26.

Deadlines extended to request reimbursement for debris removal, infrastructure repair and other costs NEW YORK – Deadlines to apply for Public Assistance (PA) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been extended for 30 days. Counties, municipalities and certain non-profits that provide essential services of a governmental nature may qualify for PA funding to help reimburse eligible costs for rebuilding infrastructure such as bridges, roads and public utilities.
