WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Residents who registered for disaster assistance and did not receive reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for items purchased in direct response to Tropical Storm Irene damages from August 27- 29 may appeal the decision by providing the appropriate receipts.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Some residents in Berkshire and Franklin counties who have applied for federal disaster assistance cannot be contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They have moved and left no forwarding address or new contact phone number. Without an updated change of address, mail cannot be forwarded and may cause important information or checks to be returned.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Residents in Berkshire and Franklin counties affected by the August 27 - 29 storms can request the assistance of a lawyer through a toll-free legal aid line. The service is provided through a partnership comprised of the American Bar Association, the Berkshire County Bar Association, the Franklin County Bar Association, the Hampden County Bar Association and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Homeowners, renters and business owners in Berkshire and Franklin counties have one month left to register for federal disaster assistance to cover damage and losses from Tropical Storm Irene. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) said today that the deadline for residents to apply for disaster assistance is Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Buckland Disaster Recovery Center (DRC), located at the Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 26 Ashfield Road in Shelburne Falls, Mass 01370 will close permanently at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, disaster officials announced today. It will also be closed over the Columbus Day weekend, - Saturday through Monday - from 6 p.m. on Friday and reopen for its final day of operation on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Individuals who lost work or income as a direct result of Tropical Storm Irene only have until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, to register for Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Individuals who are unemployed due to the storm may call (877) 232-6200 to apply. Individuals with a speech or hearing disability may call (TTY) 1-800-439-2370.  Hours of operation are today through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, go to: www.mass.gov/dua/disasterui.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Many Massachusetts residents received assistance from a number of volunteer agencies following the damages caused by Tropical Storm Irene during the period August 27 - 29. This is not the same as receiving assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Inevitably, some people affected by Tropical Storm Irene will not meet the eligibility requirements of government disaster aid programs or will have serious unmet needs even after receiving help from these programs. For these individuals and families, assistance may come from committees made up of faith-based organizations, non-profit agencies and state and local agency personnel who work on situations that may range from home repair to counseling.

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- After an individual registers for federal disaster assistance for damage and losses caused by Tropical Storm Irene, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mails a copy of the application and a copy of the publication “Help after a Disaster: A Guide to the Individuals and Households Program” to the applicant that answers frequently asked questions about the assistance process.
