BURLINGTON, Vt. -- As Vermonters repair their homes in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, recovery officials are urging residents to build their homes safer and smarter. Raising electrical components and heating, ventilating and cooling (HVAC) equipment above potential flood levels can provide flood protection for a home. Homeowners can also implement cost-effective preventive measures such as raising electrical systems.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Homeowners who had basement flooding from Tropical Storm Irene are encouraged to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, because FEMA grants may cover uninsured damage. For damage FEMA cannot cover, a low-interest disaster loan may provide needed funds to pay for repair.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- State and federal recovery officials are reminding Vermonters repairing damage to their homes or businesses from Tropical Storm Irene that they must still get the appropriate building permits before beginning any repair or rebuilding work. Vermont Emergency Management (VEM) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials stress that when there is any doubt, residents or business owners should contact their town or city to find out what permits are needed, if any.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Just three weeks after Sept. 1 -- the date Vermont received a major disaster declaration due to the effects of Tropical Storm Irene -- FEMA has approved nearly $14 million in assistance grants to individuals and families. That includes over $13 million for housing assistance to help repair, rebuild or replace housing and for rental assistance, as well as more than $708,000 for assistance with other needs, such as replacement of personal property or medical expenses.
