BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency is opening a disaster recovery center in St. Johnsbury to assist individuals, households and businesses that were affected by the storms and flooding this spring in central and northeastern Vermont. The St. Johnsbury center opens officially at noon on Monday, July 25 and will be staffed with disaster recovery specialists from various federal, state and local agencies and organizations who can provide information and answer questions about storm-related assistance.

NEWPORT, Vt. -- As a Disaster Assistance Employee, Vermont native Helena Hicks has traveled the country with FEMA. After Hurricane Andrew, she used an orange crate as her desk, setting up wherever there was room. Following the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, she walked a plank to board the disaster ship U.S.S. Peleliu, interviewing survivors for assistance. And now in her hometown of Newport, she has been making personal phone calls from the disaster recovery center, encouraging Vermonters to apply for assistance if they've been affected by the spring flooding.

BURLINGTON, Vt.  – The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be closing its temporary offices in Franklin and Orleans Counties, but those affected by this spring’s rains and flooding can continue to get help. The disaster recovery center in Newport will close Friday, July 22 at 6 p.m., while the center in Swanton will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. Individuals can visit other centers in Vermont or call FEMA’s Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362).

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Gravel roads that turn into mud in springtime are part of Vermont's lore, but a federal road expert is hoping to change that. Federal Emergency Management Agency Mitigation Engineer Richard Downer is offering workshops throughout Vermont to teach state and local road crews how to use high-tech products to rebuild roads that will be less susceptible to future rains and flooding.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- More than $1 million in federal disaster aid has been approved for eligible applicants affected by the spring storms and flooding that occurred from April 23rd to May 9th. Since President Obama issued a major disaster declaration on June 15th for these storms in the counties of Addison, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, and Orleans, over 800 people have registered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
