Albany, New York -- Federal emergency aid for nine New York counties has been approved, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said today. The federal assistance is in response to Governor Paterson's December 15, 2008 request for federal emergency aid following the ice storm. The counties are: Albany, Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Washington.

Following is a summary of key federal disaster aid programs that can be made available as needed and warranted under President Bush's major disaster declaration issued for New York. "Emergency" is any occasion or instance in which the president determines that federal assistance is needed to supplement state and local efforts to save lives and protect property and public health and safety or to avert the threat of a catastrophe in any part of the United States.
