March 17, 1999 - News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Three additional New York counties now are eligible to apply for state and federal disaster assistance to help pay for emergency measures taken during heavy snowstorms on Mar. 3-6, according to federal and state emergency management officials. The counties are Ontario, Orleans and Wyoming. Marianne C. Jackson of the Federal Emergency Management Agency made the designations today after a review of additional data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other sources regarding "record" or "near record" snowfall for these areas.

March 10, 1999 - News Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that federal relief funds have been made available for snowbound communities in three western New York State counties under an emergency declaration issued for the state by President Clinton. FEMA Director James Lee Witt said the President took the action this afternoon following a review of the agency's analysis of the state's request for federal aid related to the late winter snowstorms that occurred over the period of March 3-6.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
