OAKLAND, Calif. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to help Nevada fight the Mudd Fire in Elko County. A Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) was approved August 23, 2006. At the time of the grant, the Mudd Fire was threatening 300 homes and had forced mandatory evacuations of about 1,000 persons. Burning more than 3,000 acres on the outskirts of Elko, the human–caused fire threatened businesses and a number of state and Federal facilities.
