OAKLAND, Calif. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), immediately after being contacted by the state, authorized the use of federal funds to help California fight the Pattison Fire in Mariposa County. Michael D. Brown, under secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, approved federal fire-management money at 7:15 p.m. last night, one-and-a-half hours after receiving a request for assistance from the state.
