OAKLAND, Calif. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), immediately after being contacted by the state, authorized the use of federal funds to help California fight the Oregon Fire burning near the town of Cherokee in Butte County. Michael D. Brown, under secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, approved federal fire-management money at 8:05 p.m. last night, within two hours of receiving a request for assistance from the state.
