BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It could easily have been mistaken for an open house held by a real estate agent for a new listing. Cars were parked on both sides of the street and people milled about outside. The front and back doors were wide open, both for ventilation and to make it easier for the steady stream of visitors to go inside and take a look. But this wasn’t about the sale of a house.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Relations teams are reaching out to survivors in areas reporting the fewest number of loan application returns.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In about half an hour, survivors of the recent tornadoes in Alabama can make a big difference in their recovery by applying for a low-interest loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The process isn’t hard at all. By returning the SBA loan application, homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace their storm-damaged home. Homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $40,000 for replacement of personal property.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. „Ÿ U.S. Small Business Administration officials have heard it all when it comes to homeowners who tell them why they aren't going to apply for a low-interest disaster loan. There are many reasons why only 3,639 of the 34,928 homeowners and renters who received SBA applications for low-interest disaster loans have returned the forms to the SBA. (Also, 596 of 8,630 businesses have returned their SBA applications.)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers turned over the keys to Birmingham Fire Station #18 on June 24, the seventh temporary critical facility completed by the Corps since the April tornadoes.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Of the 43,000 disaster loan applications sent to survivors of the April and May storms and tornadoes by the U. S. Small Business Administration, fewer than 4,000 have been returned. SBA loans represent the major source of federal funding for home repair and reconstruction. SBA applications may also open the door to other financial assistance.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – People in the 43 Alabama counties designated for individual assistance after the recent storms and tornadoes have 21 more days to apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The new deadline to apply for help is Monday, July 18.
