HONOLULU -- Are You Ready? On March 11 Hawaii experienced tsunami waves from an event which occurred in Honshu, Japan, approximately 3,800 miles away. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the Hawaiian Islands, but damages are estimated at over $30.6 million dollars. The message is clear. There is no substitute for knowing how to keep yourself, your family, home and business safe. Emergency preparedness is important for all Americans. Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count.

Honolulu, Hawaii -- After a federally declared disaster, such as the Hawaii Tsunami of March 11, 2011, receiving federal funds is a critical part of the response and recovery process. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through its Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program reimburses state and local governments for the actual costs to repair or rebuild damaged public infrastructure. The program also provides funds for certain hazard mitigation projects.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to Hawaii to supplement the state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by tsunami waves on March 11, 2011. Federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the tsunami waves surge in Hawaii County, Maui County, and the City and County of Honolulu.
