LATHAM, N.Y. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing free publications to help Suffolk County homeowners and contactors build more disaster-resistant homes. FEMA publishes a variety of books, pamphlets and building plans that describe how to help protect homes against floods, high winds, and other potential disaster-related damage. The tips and techniques are specifically geared for the do-it-yourselfer and building contractors. Information on retrofitting buildings and elevating utilities is included.?

LATHAM, N.Y. -- Federal assistance is now available in four additional New York State counties to help with the cost of digging out from the severe snowstorm, Dec. 26 – 27, 2010. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said Public Assistance –aid to state and local governments, schools and certain private nonprofits – is now available in Columbia, Dutchess, Kings, and Rockland counties.

To prevent losses due to flooding, the Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends homeowners, renters and businesses make an annual review of their flood insurance policies, update as necessary, and be sure premiums remain paid in full. Now is the perfect time to review those policies. Floodwaters can threaten homes and businesses. Flooding throughout the spring and after an intense storm can cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
