BISMARCK, N.D. - Turning to Mother Nature is providing an ingenious solution for a North Dakota rural electric cooperative (REC) and some customers who lost power to livestock well pumps after an ice storm last spring. The fierce April 1-2, 2010 “Good Friday” winter storm caused more than $30 million in damages to RECs statewide. Shortly thereafter, President Obama issued a federal disaster declaration to provide assistance to restore power and assist the RECs with infrastructure repairs.

BISMARCK, N.D. - Ice storms are an unplanned event, but in rural North Dakota, Rural Electric Cooperatives (RECs) have come to expect such storms as one of the hazards Mother Nature can dish out each winter. "It is a fact of life these outages will happen." according to Gary Allen of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative. "When ice comes into the mix, the combination of wind and ice can bring the entire system to its knees."

BISMARCK, N.D. - This past winter, several winter storms knocked down thousands of power poles, taking out miles of line and jeopardizing the safety of thousands of North Dakotans who were left without power in frigid weather. As efforts were made to restore power and rebuild the electrical infrastructure as well as mitigate against future damage, there was an unexpected beneficiary – the whooping crane.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to the State of North Dakota to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by flooding beginning on February 26, 2010, and continuing.
