SAN JUAN, PR -- A denial letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) does not mean you are not eligible for disaster assistance. According to FEMA, there are several reasons why an applicant may receive a denial letter. "By law, FEMA cannot duplicate what the insurance has already covered, or pay deductibles," said Federal Coordinating Officer, Justo Hernández. "Still, applicants can appeal any FEMA decision within 60 days of the date of the denial letter," he added. Other common reasons why applicants may receive denial letters are:

SAN JUAN, PR -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has made available mental health services to those affected by the severe storms and flooding of September 21 to October 3, 2008. The services are being provided through the Mental Health & Anti-Addiction Services Administration (MHAASA).

SAN JUAN, PR -- Residents living or working in the municipalities of Arroyo, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, Guayanilla, Gurabo, Juncos, Lajas, Peñuelas, San Lorenzo, Villalba, and Yauco may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) as a result of the severe storms and flooding of September 21 - October 3. The deadline to apply for this type of assistance is November 17, 2008.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and federal recovery officials announced today that the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) will remain open on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, Veteran's Day holiday. The hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The FEMA registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) and the website, www.fema.gov, will also be available for those who need to register or have questions about their applications. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Disaster recovery officials have announced today that the municipalities of Las Piedras and Naguabo were designated disaster declared areas, making their residents eligible for disaster assistance. The assistance will help homeowners, renters and businesses recover from the effects of the storms and flooding which occurred from September 21 to October 3, 2008.
