SALEM, Ore. -- After the December 2007 storms, the tiny coastal community of Gearhart had more downed trees than they had residents - well over 1,000 according to City Administrator Dennis McNally. Cleaning up was a huge job and FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) came by to help. McNally had never experienced a storm of this severity. He knew nothing about FEMA or its public assistance (PA) program, which is designed to help city, state, county and tribal governments and nonprofit agencies that provide essential services recover from disasters.
SALEM, Ore. -- The severe storms, wind, mudslides, landslides and flooding that swept through Oregon Dec. 1-17, 2007, left a path of destruction. Oregonians will long remember the swirling floodwaters, damaged homes and tangled debris left in the wake of the storms.
SALEM, Ore. -- Seven Vernonia families, homeless since the December 2007 flood, will move into temporary housing - new mobile homes - beginning at about noon tomorrow, March 22, 2008. "We are delighted to be handing over the keys to these first seven families," said Abby Kershaw, state coordinating officer with Oregon Emergency Management (OEM). "Now these families will be close to their homes, schools, and neighbors as they continue the recovery process."
