That is the warning issued by officials with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Unfortunately in disaster situations, scam artists are often ready to take advantage of the misfortunes of others," said IEMA Director Andrew Velasquez, III. "People should be especially alert for solicitors who promise to speed up the insurance or buildings permit process and those who ask for large cash deposits or advance payments in full."

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced on Oct. 19 that it is providing assistance to Cook, Knox and Warren counties to help pay for emergency services and to repair or replace public facilities damaged by the Aug. 20-31 severe storms and flooding. Governmental entities, municipal authorities, and certain private nonprofit organizations in Cook, Knox and Warren counties are now eligible for all categories of Public Assistance. Public Assistance has been available in DeKalb, Kane, and LaSalle counties.

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Sycamore Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) is closing Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. and will reopen Monday, Oct. 22 as a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Centers (DLOC) federal and state disaster officials announced today. The DeKalb Center is located at the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State Street, Suite 302 in Sycamore. The Sycamore DLOC will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until further notice. The St. Charles and Seneca DLOCs remain open Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until further notice.

Information is offered to everyone about steps individuals can take to protect homes and businesses from future storm and flood damage, about disaster assistance and flood insurance. Mitigation strategies range from something as simple as a family emergency plan to building a "safe room" that protects lives against the hazards of tornados.
