ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Only one week remains for residents and business owners in the disaster declared counties who sustained damage from the severe storms and flooding that occurred Aug. 20-31 to apply for disaster assistance. The deadline to apply for disaster assistance is November 26. The eligible counties are DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, LaSalle, Lake and Will.

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- With most eligible individuals already registered for assistance, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reduced the hours that operators will be available for telephone registration. As of Monday, November 5, the toll-free number will be staffed Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. CDT. The registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Hearing-and speech-impaired residents may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Individuals may also register at www.fema.gov 24 hours a day.

Every home should have a Disaster Supply Kit that includes a weather radio. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) urge all Illinois residents to act now to assemble their family's emergency supplies before the start of the winter storm season.

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Tax relief for Illinois taxpayers affected by the August 20-31 storms has been announced by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for people in the declared disaster area in DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Lake, LaSalle, and Will counties, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). Deadlines for affected taxpayers to file returns, pay taxes and perform other time-sensitive acts that occured between the dates of Aug. 20, 2007 and Nov. 26, 2007, have been postponed to Nov. 26, 2007, the IRS said.
