ALBANY, N.Y. -- Steps can be taken to combat mold growth and its potential to cause serious health problems as well as structural damage to homes, according to officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the New York State Emergency Management Office. Some items must be removed; others can be cleaned. Here are some tips: Control the moisture problem. The source of the water must be identified and corrected.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) and the City of New York have opened a Mobile Disaster Recovery Center in Staten Island to provide face-to-face assistance to those affected by the April 14-18 nor?easter. The mobile unit was opened today at noon at 4434 Amboy Road, Staten Island 10312, and will remain open through Tuesday, May 15.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Mold is an ever-present problem following storm flooding and can be a significant health risk if care is not taken, state and federal officials warn. "People are anxious to get on with their lives after a flood," said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's top official for the nor'easter disaster recovery, "but if you had flood waters in your home, take the time to clean thoroughly so problems don't arise later that affect your home or your health."

ALBANY, N.Y. -- State and federal officials have approved more than $5 million in disaster grants and low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damages during the April 14-18 nor'easter. To date, more than 4,400 New York households and businesses have applied for federal and state disaster assistance.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that disaster assistance for state and local government and certain private non-profits in 12 counties has been approved. Disaster assistance for renters, homeowners, and businesses in three more counties has also been approved. At the request of the Governor, President Bush signed a major disaster declaration for New York State on April 24 following the April nor'easter. The April 24th declaration triggered disaster assistance for individuals in Orange, Rockland, and Westchester counties.
