Urbandale, Iowa -- Recent flooding in several Iowa counties is hastening homeowners to buy flood insurance and take extra measures to prevent damage from possible flooding. State and federal officials urge homeowners to take precautions with simple, inexpensive ways to prevent or reduce future flood damage. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) calls such actions "hazard mitigation."

Urbandale, Iowa -- Federal and State of Iowa officials announced today more than $1.5 million have been obligated to date to reimburse state and local government agencies and certain non-profit organizations to help repair and restore essential public facilities and reimburse emergency costs due to the February severe winter storm.

Anyone can buy flood insurance if his or her community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Also, you don't have to be in a high-risk area to buy flood insurance. In fact, 25 percent of damages occur outside of high-risk areas.

URBANDALE, Iowa -- Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division (HSEMD) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today the addition of Cherokee, Ida, Osceola and Webster counties to the Presidential Emergency Declaration for Iowa counties affected by recent record snowfalls. This presidential declaration enables public entities to receive federal aid.

This presidential disaster enables public agencies to be eligible to receive federal disaster aid.
