ATLANTA, Ga. -- In December 2006 and February 2007, tornadoes and severe storms struck central Florida, causing widespread damage across Lake, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia Counties. The presidentially declared disasters enabled citizens and communities to apply for federal assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports that nearly $43 million in Individual Assistance, Public Assistance and disaster loans have been invested to date in the State of Florida to support the recovery effort.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than $38.3 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved to help people and communities recover from tornadoes that struck Central Florida in December and February. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) also reported that more than 2,700 Floridians applied for disaster assistance.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Everyone in Florida lives in a flood zone; they just don't know it. Or, perhaps, they think a low-risk area is a no-risk area. However, for those who live in a low- to moderate-risk area, outside of the 100-year floodplain, signing up for an inexpensive Preferred Risk Policy under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a wise precaution. Flood damage is not covered under homeowner's insurance, and there is no guarantee that federal disaster assistance will be available if and when a flood occurs.
