ATLANTA, Ga. -- In December 2006 and February 2007, tornadoes and severe storms struck central Florida, causing widespread damage across Lake, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia Counties. The presidentially declared disasters enabled citizens and communities to apply for federal assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports that nearly $43 million in Individual Assistance, Public Assistance and disaster loans have been invested to date in the State of Florida to support the recovery effort.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than $38.3 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved to help people and communities recover from tornadoes that struck Central Florida in December and February.The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) also reported that more than 2,700 Floridians applied for disaster assistance.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Everyone in Florida lives in a flood zone; they just don't know it. Or, perhaps, they think a low-risk area is a no-risk area. However, for those who live in a low- to moderate-risk area, outside of the 100-year floodplain, signing up for an inexpensive Preferred Risk Policy under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a wise precaution. Flood damage is not covered under homeowner's insurance, and there is no guarantee that federal disaster assistance will be available if and when a flood occurs.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Building better, stronger and safer is the key line of attack Floridians are advised to consider in the wake of tornadoes. Exceeding the requirements of state and local building codes with a "code plus" approach to rebuilding increases the disaster resistance of homes and businesses and decreases the chance of major structural damage from wind or water.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Recovery officials in Florida have announced the closing of the two remaining State-FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), located at Victoria Square , 1706 South Woodland Blvd. and 38521 Lakeview Drive in Lady Lake , at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 10, 2007.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- One month since destructive tornadoes ripped through four Central Florida counties, many residents' lives remain disrupted and personal property destroyed. State-federal recovery efforts continue and more than $18 million in disaster assistance has been approved for over 550 households and business owners.
