GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Every day flooding occurs somewhere in the United States. Floods are the most common natural disaster causing not only billions of dollars in damage, but untold heartache for millions of people. While there is no way to eliminate the pain and suffering caused from natural disasters, individuals and families can lessen the emotional and financial toll from flooding by purchasing flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP is managed by the U.S Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Planning in advance of a disaster is important for any community, first because planning helps avoid spending large amounts of money on rebuilding and repairs. But even more important, it can save lives. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers assistance for pre-disaster mitigation in the form of grants to eligible governments and non-profit organizations, and will provide information to anyone anxious to protect life and property during a disaster. Funds are made available through the FEMA administered Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) program.

GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Teams of federal and state infrastructure specialists will soon be meeting with state and local governments and certain non-profit organizations to assist them in moving through the reimbursement process for infrastructure damage caused by Tropical Depression Ernesto. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) made federal disaster aid in the form of Public Assistance (PA), or infrastructure assistance available to the Commonwealth of Virginia on Sept. 22, following a request for aid by Governor Timothy M. Kaine.
