BILOXI, Miss. -- Voluntary Agency Liaisons (VAL) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will host a Helping Hands Workshop from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 22 in Bay St. Louis at the Hancock County Library Annex, 525 Ulman Avenue. The Hancock County Helping Hands event will mark the 18th workshop conducted by FEMA VAL across the lower six counties, targeting families in FEMA temporary housing. Organizers estimate more than 1,000 applicants have attended the events.

BILOXI, Miss. --The City of Bay St. Louis will receive federal funds to upgrade a new fire station to federal shelter standards. The improved fire station will serve as a safe haven for first responders and sheltering for emergency operations.

BILOXI, Miss. -- Despite hurricanes Gustav and Ike making landfall along the gulf coast in recent days, the Federal Emergency Management Agency?s (FEMA) Mississippi Transitional Recovery Office (MS TRO) remains focused on its mission of helping Mississippi recover from Hurricane Katrina. "We just want to assure everyone that we are continuing to work every day in helping rebuild the Mississippi Gulf Coast," said Alec Watson, acting director of the MS TRO. "We still have a job to do here and will not leave until it is finished."

BILOXI, Miss. -- A federal grant will pay for a 5,000-square-foot facility on the Stone Middle School campus in Stone County. The building's design will follow established federal guidelines for shelter construction. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide a $1.4 million grant from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to fund the project. The HMGP is administered by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency which identifies and manages the projects from beginning to closeout.

BILOXI, Miss. -- The Jackson County School District will receive a federal grant to permanently relocate the St. Martin High School and build a shelter in the new facility.
