The four disasters resulted in more than 1.247 million storm victims applying for federal and state aid, and federal officials continue to review grant requests to reimburse local agencies for recovery projects under way.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- People with speech or hearing impairments who suffered damages in Florida's Fall hurricanes need not worry. Help is as close as a phone call, thanks to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) special TTY telephone service. The special line-- 1-800-462-7585-- operates 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Monday through Friday. Callers reach an operator using a text line and need to have their disaster application number available when they call. Assistance is available in both English and Spanish.

ORLANDO, Fla.-- Disaster relief payments received from damages during last year’s Florida hurricanes are not taxable, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) states on its website (IRS.gov) that “qualified disaster relief payments are not included in the income of individuals to the extent any expenses compensated by these payments are not otherwise compensated for by insurance or other reimbursement.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Since the first Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened in Charlotte County on August 17, 2004, 150 centers have assisted 581,712 disaster assistance applicants with damages and losses from the recent hurricanes. Presently, nine DRCs are open throughout the state, providing applicants with needed information and services.

ORLANDO, Fla. --The operational hours for the disaster Helpline are being changed by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of Florida as the number of inquiries has decreased, federal and state officials said today. Beginning April 11, the Helpline will be open to receive phone calls from disaster victims during the new hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
