Raleigh, N.C. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that it has provided almost $11 million in federal funds to help cover the cost of damages and emergency costs incurred by communities, state agencies and non-profit agencies in last December's ice storm. According to Federal Coordinating Officer Michael Bolch, the funds were made available through FEMA's Public Assistance program in the 43 counties that were named after North Carolina was declared a disaster area by President Bush.

December 12, 2002 - News Release

Washington, D. C. -- Federal disaster funds were made available today for North Carolina to help communities recover from the crippling ice storm that hit the state last week, according to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh said the assistance was authorized under a major disaster declaration issued by President Bush following a review of the agency's analysis of the state's request for federal aid. The declaration covers damage to public property from the storm that occurred over the period of December 4-6.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
