Columbus, MS -- Many residents of disaster-declared counties here in Mississippi have questions on whether the money they have already spent for tornado damage repairs is reimbursable as disaster assistance.

Columbus, MS -- State and federal officials announced that the joint federal/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened to assist those affected by the severe storms and tornadoes in November, will be closed Sundays beginning this weekend. The DRC will remain open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice.

Columbus, MS -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has various systems to identify people who try to take undue advantage of disaster assistance. Homes of applicants for disaster assistance are inspected to verify the losses claimed. All cases identified as possibly fraudulent are referred to the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation and potential criminal charges. FEMA also uses information from insurance companies and other disaster agencies to cross-check and verify claims to detect duplicate or fraudulent applications.

Columbus, MS -- Mississippi residents needing assistance in their recovery following the November tornadoes may seek crisis counseling, thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant provides crisis counseling and outreach services to individuals and families in the designated counties. These services also will be available at schools and for other groups as requested.
