June 25, 2002 - News Release

Wise, VA -Help may be available for homeowners and renters who face mortgage foreclosure or eviction because of economic hardships related to flooding and tornadoes that occurred from April 28 to May 3. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program is designed to assist people whose homes were not damaged by the flooding but, because of disaster-related financial hardships, cannot make mortgage or rent payments.

June 17, 2002 - News Release

Wise, VA - Residents of six counties and one independent city in Virginia who suffered damages from May flooding and severe storms have less than one week to apply for disaster unemployment assistance. The deadline for residents of Bedford, Campbell, Cumberland, Greensville, Prince Edward and Shenandoah counties and the city of Bedford is June 21. Anyone interested in filing for disaster unemployment assistance should visit the nearest Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) field office.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards
