Waldorf, MD -- There is less than a week left for residents and business owners in Charles, Calvert and Dorchester counties to register for disaster assistance that may be available for April 28 tornado damages. The deadline is Monday, July 1, 2002. The toll-free registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Operators are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.

Waldorf, MD -- A month after President Bush declared Calvert, Charles and Dorchester counties federal disaster areas as a result of April 28 tornado damage, state and federal response and recovery efforts have reached more than $9.1 million in grants and loans. "We encourage those who are waiting for insurance or find insurance falling short to call us as soon as possible to access available recovery programs," said State Coordinating Officer Donald L. Keldsen of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

Waldorf, MD -- Local businesses and libraries are offering free brochures produced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on how to reduce disaster risks, "The information we're making available will show how to reduce or eliminate the effects of natural disasters," said Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies. The brochures are distributed in areas that suffered damages from the April 28 tornado.

Waldorf, MD -- Federal agencies will end their presence at the People’s Place at the close of business Friday, May 31. After that, these agencies will continue to serve the needs of tornado affected residents of southern Maryland through their 800 toll free telephone services, state and federal recovery officials said today.

Waldorf, MD -- Federal and state disaster assistance to those affected by the April 28 tornado in Calvert, Charles and Dorchester counties has reached more than $1.7 million said Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "Grants and loans to help with recovery are reaching those affected," Davies added. "We urge anyone with disaster-related damage that has not yet contacted us, to do so by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (TTY: 1-800-462-7585).

Waldorf, MD -- Hours to register through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for various sources to help with recovering from the April 28 tornado damages are now 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, federal and state recovery officials said today. The registration center will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday - May 25 through May 27 - for Memorial Day and will reopen for business at 8 a.m., Tuesday, May 28.
