August 28, 2001 - News Release

Tazewell, VA -- The deadline to apply for assistance after the July floods in Southwestern Virginia has been extended 30 days to October 10, 2001, state and federal officials announced today. "We extended the registration period in light of the many new registrations each day from the designated counties," said Acting Federal Coordinating Officer Pete Martinasco. "The additional 30 days will provide residents who suffered damages from the flooding adequate time to register for assistance."

Tazewell, VA -- Tuesday, September 4, is the deadline for residents of Buchanan, Dickenson, Russell, Scott, Smyth and Wise counties to apply for disaster unemployment assistance as a result of severe storms and flooding that occurred across the Commonwealth on July 8, 2001 and thereafter. Disaster unemployment assistance deadlines are set according to when a designated jurisdiction was declared eligible for disaster assistance.

Tazewell, VA -- As the southwestern Virginia flood recovery enters its eighth week, more than $3.4 million in federal and state assistance has been approved for the many victims whose lives were impacted by the floods, according to figures released today by federal and state officials.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
