San Juan, PR -- As we head into another hurricane season, experience has taught us just how devastating hurricanes can be to our communities and economic viability. Less than three years ago, Hurricane Georges destroyed thousands of homes and businesses totaling more than $1.8 billion dollars. When I look back to September of 1998, I still remember flying over a sea of blue tarps strapped to homes in the mountains of Utuado.

San Juan, PR -- Starting June 3, 2001, all the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) and the mobile DRCs will be open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for residents affected by the May floods. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico established three centers and two mobile centers last week to assist individuals. The DRCs have been set up to provide answers about disaster assistance programs. The DRCs have phones available for residents who do not have phone service to call into the toll-free registration line.

San Juan, PR -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved more than $500,000 in aid to help residents affected by the May 6 to May 11 floods, according to disaster officials.
