San Juan, PR -- Residents of Puerto Rico who were affected by the May 6 - 11 floods and have not yet registered for federal disaster assistance have only three more weeks to apply. The last day to register for most federal and commonwealth disaster assistance programs is July 16. The registration line will close at 5:00 p.m. on that day.

San Juan, PR -- Commonwealth and federal recovery officials report that more than $6.5 million has been approved in disaster aid to help local residents and businesses recover from the floods and mudslides that occurred May 6 to 11, 2001. After the May 16 presidential disaster declaration for the affected areas in Puerto Rico, the recovery efforts performed to date by FEMA, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and other federal and voluntary agencies are: INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY GRANT (IFG) PROGRAM

San Juan, PR -- State and federal disaster recovery officials are advising Puerto Rico residents who have disaster-related damage because of the May floods to be extremely careful when hiring contractors to clean-up and repair their homes and businesses. "Scam artists seldom hesitate to capitalize on the misfortune of others," warned Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. The Attorney General's Office for the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Better Business Bureau offer the following "Consumer Beware" suggestions:

San Juan, PR -- Officials from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will keep the Guayanilla Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) open until June 29 in order to continue assistance to individuals affected by the May floods. The DRC was scheduled to close on June 22.

San Juan, PR -- Residents who sustained losses or damage as a result of the May 6 - 11 floods and mudslides have until the close of business on June 22 to visit FEMA/commonwealth Disaster Recovery Centers in Guayanilla, San Germán, Lajas, and Sabana Grande federal and commonwealth disaster recovery officials announced today. "But even after the centers close, FEMA will be as close as a telephone call away," said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. "The deadline for residents to apply for disaster assistance is July 15."

San Juan, PR -- Officials from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will reopen the mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) on June 19 in Cabo Rojo in order to continue assistance to individuals affected by the May floods. The DRC will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
