Parsons, KS -- Residents of Crawford, Labette, and Neosho counties who suffered damage from the severe storms and tornadoes of April 19th and 20th have only one month left to register for federal disaster assistance programs.

Parsons, KS -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Parsons will convert to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) workshop on Tuesday, May 30th. The center is located in the City Municipal Building (Basement) at 112 South 17th Street. While the DRC will be closed for the holiday weekend, it will remain open until 6 p.m. on Friday, May 26th. On Tuesday May 30th, the DRC will convert to an SBA workshop. The workshop will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until further notice.

Parsons, KS -- People who live or work in Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties and who are unable to work because of the severe storms and tornadoes that hit the area April 19th and 20th, may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). For residents of the affected counties, the application period for DUA will close June 5, 2000. DUA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the Kansas Department of Human Resources (KDHR).

Parsons, KS -- State and federal officials announced today that the joint federal and state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened in Parsons to assist residents of Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties affected by the severe storms and tornadoes of April 19th and 20th, will be closed for the Memorial Day weekend Saturday through Monday, May 27-29.

Parsons, KS -- Federal, state and local officials announced that two free presentations on Safe Room construction and School Design will be held Monday, May 22nd at the City Municipal Building Auditorium located at 112 South 17th Street in Parsons. Larry Tanner, research associate from Texas Tech University's Wind Engineering Research Center in Lubbock, Texas, will deliver the presentations that are open to the public.

Parsons, KS -- State and federal officials announced today that the joint federal/state Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opened in Parsons to assist residents of Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties affected by the severe storms and tornadoes April 19th and 20th, will be closed Sundays beginning this weekend. The DRC will remain open between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday until further notice.

Parsons, KS -- Disaster officials of both Kansas Division Emergency Management (KDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urge owners of wind-damaged property and building contractors working in the affected area to check with local zoning officials before making extensive repair or rebuilding wind-damaged property.

Lines are open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CDT) until further notice.

Parsons, KS -- State and federal disaster recovery officials advise Kansans to be extremely careful when hiring contractors to clean and repair disaster damage, offer to construct Safe Rooms or remove disaster debris. Some scam artists claim to be "FEMA certified or FEMA approved." The Federal Emergency Management Agency neither certifies nor endorses any private-sector contractor. Individuals and government entities should be extremely cautious when hiring contractors after any disaster.

Parsons, KS -- City officials today finalized plans to assist the residents of Parsons with removal of debris that resulted from the severe storms and tornadoes that occurred on April 19th and 20th. Glen Welden, Parsons City Manager announced that beginning on the morning of May 22nd, city crews will begin picking up all debris for home owners and renters.
