PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Maricopa County residents and business owners who suffered damages from this September's severe storms have only until Tuesday, December 14, 1999, to register for disaster assistance. A reminder of the approaching deadline was issued today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Arizona Division of Emergency Management (ADEM).

"In disaster situations, scam artists are often ready to take advantage of the misfortunes of others," warns Michael P. Austin, Director, Arizona Division of Emergency Management. PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Maricopa County residents and business owners who suffered storm damages between September 14 and 23 are encouraged to register for various types of federal, state and local disaster assistance. A toll-free telephone number operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is in service for that purpose: (800) 462-9029 TDD, (800) 660-8005, for persons with hearing or speech impairments 7 days a week 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Mountain Time.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Federal disaster aid was made available today for storm victims in Arizona's Maricopa County under a major disaster declaration issued for the state by President Clinton, according to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
