CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A week after President Clinton issued a disaster declaration for flood-ravaged Iowa counties damage inspectors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are in the field. Inspectors are now in the area examining residences and personal property damaged by severe storms and flooding that swept through the area beginning July 2.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- To further help individuals and businesses affected by recent storms and flooding, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Iowa will open three Disaster Recovery Centers Friday, July 30, in Black Hawk, Butler, and Jones counties in eastern Iowa.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Emergency management officials are urging Iowa residents with basements flooded by the recent storms to use caution when pumping out. Removing all of the water at once may cause serious structural damage to the house. Draining the water too fast could cause the collapse of the cellar walls, floors, and foundation of the house. The water must be drained slowly to equalize pressure on both sides of the wall.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Residents of Black Hawk, Butler, and Jones counties who applied for disaster assistance following the tornadoes, storms and floods in May must re-apply if they sustained damage in the recent July storms and floods.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Today, Bremer, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Floyd, and Worth counties were added to President Clinton's July 22 disaster declaration for Iowa. This brings the number of Iowa counties eligible for federal aid to nine. The other four counties are Black Hawk, Butler, Jones, and Woodbury.
