WICHITA, Kan. -- The Teleregistration and Helpline numbers for FEMA have changed hours beginning on Tuesday, May 18, 1999. They will be closed on Sundays and have changed hours of operation on the other days. The toll-free Teleregistration number 1-800-462-9029 (TDD 1-800-462-7585) will operate Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Helpline toll-free number is 1-800-525-0321 (TDD 1-800-462-7585) and hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Kansas Hazard Mitigation Team are presenting a free workshop, Rebuilding a Safer, Stronger Community, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 1999, at the Clarion Hotel-Airport, 5805 West Kellogg, Wichita, Kan. "We hope that all those interested in learning more about lessening the damage from severe storms and tornadoes will attend this free workshop-renters, homeowners, business owners, builders and lenders," said Federal Coordinating Officer Curt Musgrave.

You are welcome to attend the entire workshop to learn about Safe Room construction design, wind storm mitigation techniques, and hear a presentation from the National Weather Service, including a discussion of NOAA's weather radio indoor alert system.

WICHITA, Kan. -- Many residents of Reno, Sedgwick and Sumner counties received losses and damage from the severe storms and tornadoes on May 3. Anyone who suffered storm-related damage should call the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration number (1-800-462-9029). "Federal and state disaster assistance is available for everyone, whether your income is low or high, whether or not you have insurance," said Federal Coordinating Officer Curt Musgrave. Specific decisions on loans and grants are made on a case-by-case basis.
