SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Victims of the December freeze disaster facing property foreclosure or eviction from their California homes have until Monday, August 9, 1999 to register for help, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services (OES).

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- A telephone hotline - (800) 310-7032 - for freeze disaster victims seeking free legal assistance will close this Friday, July 30, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Provided by the Young Lawyers of the California Bar Association, the referral hotline is for people who were affected by last December's freeze and, as a result, are having difficulty with evictions, foreclosures, leases and legal notices.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Californians who suffered damages or losses because of the severe freeze in late December may still call for disaster assistance, according to FEMA and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. Beginning Monday, May 17, and until further notice, FEMA's toll-free Teleregistration lines for freeze victims will operate with a new schedule as follows: 1-800-745-0243, or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY), for people with speech or hearing impairments Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- FEMA's regional office in San Francisco (Region IX) continues to work with state officials on the recovery from last December's severe freeze. As of May 10, 5,316 people have registered for assistance under the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program and more than $2.5 million has been paid out to 1,591 eligible applications. Between December 20 and 28, 1998, California's San Joaquin Valley farming communities were hit with freezing temperatures that severely impacted the region's crops.
