To recognize the successful efforts of its many partners, Region III held its 4th Annual National Preparedness Month (NPM) Challenge. The NPM Challenge encourages Citizen Corps programs and partners in Region III to plan, execute and support emergency preparedness initiatives and events at the state and local levels. Both states and localities receive awards for unique and significant contributions throughout the month.
The following state and local jurisdictions received certificates for their outstanding service during NPM 2011:
The Citizen Corps programs of Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia all received the 2011 Region III Leading by Example Award. The Leading by Example Award is given to the state that fully exhibits the spirit of NPM, demonstrating superior commitment to educating communities and citizens about how to be prepared.
The 2011 Region III Together We Succeed Award was awarded to the Delaware Citizen Corps for Delaware’s Minor League Baseball Preparedness Night. The Together We Succeed Award recognizes the state and/or locality hosting an event that requires extensive collaboration among various entities. The collaboration among many diverse organizations speaks to the success of DEMA’s Citizen Corps program.
The 2011 Region III Pursuit of Excellence Award recognizes a program that has improved its NPM outreach since 2007. The Pursuit of Excellence Award was awarded to Prince George’s County Police Department (Maryland) for its Citizen Police Academy, which demonstrated a commitment to its citizens by creating an innovative approach to preparedness.
The Building Bridges Award recognizes a state and/or locality for hosting an event that demonstrates a first-time collaboration with a key preparedness partner. The 2011 Region III Building Bridges Award was given to the Philadelphia Managing Director’s Office of Emergency Management for superior collaboration among multiple agencies and partners, including the Philadelphia Bar Association and Temple University. The office’s programs demonstrated a commitment to build relationships with nontraditional emergency management stakeholders.
The 2011 Region III United We Stand Award recognizes the state with the largest number of events and activities entered into the online NPM calendar. The United We Stand Award recognizes the Commonwealth of Virginia for the largest number of NPM events and activities in FEMA Region III.
The 2011 Region III Pursuit of Excellence Award recognizes a program that has improved its NPM outreach since 2007. The Pursuit of Excellence Award was presented to Jackson County, West Virginia, in recognition of its efforts in significantly increasing its involvement in individual and community preparedness activities for residents.
