Building Science Branch - Flood and Wind Mitigation Accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2013
The Building Science Branch (BSB), which resides in the Risk Reduction Division of FEMA’s Federal Insurance Mitigation Administration (FIMA), is staffed by subject matter experts on building codes, proper construction techniques, and rebuilding strategies. They develop and produce multi-hazard mitigation guidance that focuses on creating disaster-resilient communities to reduce loss of life and property. The BSB provides technical support for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for public and private sector stakeholders, the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP), the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP), and pursue outreach strategies for communicating Building Science issues. This annual report highlights BSB accomplishments related to flood and wind mitigation completed during fiscal year (FY) 2013, including publications, presentations, training, outreach efforts, and building code activities. These accomplishments demonstrate how FEMA and its partners are reducing disaster loss throughout the country.
