How do we adopt the maps?

Once the mapping of your community is complete and all appeals and protests have been resolved, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will finalize the flood map and flood study. FEMA then issues a Letter of Final Determination, which establishes the final flood elevations, and provides the new flood map and flood study to the community.

This "final" letter also initiates the six-month adoption period during which the community must adopt or amend its floodplain management regulations. Ordinances adopted must meet or exceed FEMA Region 6's standard. Please contact your state's National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) coordinator or check their website for copies of the required ordinances.

During this time, the FEMA staff member assigned to your community will work closely with you to ensure that you understand the process and help your community successfully adopt the maps. If you have any questions, please contact FEMA or your state's NFIP coordinator.
